What is a well-woman visit?
A well-woman visit is a preventive appointment focused on helping you stay healthy through every stage of life. It is a chance to update your health history, review symptoms or concerns, discuss your goals and decide which screenings, examinations, counseling or immunizations are appropriate for you.
The visit is personalized. Not every patient needs every examination or test at every annual appointment. Your age, health history, family history, symptoms, prior results and preferences help shape the plan.
An annual visit does not automatically mean an annual Pap test or pelvic exam. Dr. Elmokadem will explain what is recommended and ask your permission before any examination.

Evidence-based prevention
Screening is personal—not one-size-fits-all.
Your preventive plan depends on age, history, prior results and individual risk. Recommendations can change, so your visit includes a review of what is due now.
Ask about your screening plan →Cervical health
For average-risk patients, current ACOG guidance recommends cervical cytology alone every three years. Earlier or additional testing may be needed for certain histories or symptoms.
HPV and cervical screening
For average-risk patients, clinician-collected primary high-risk HPV testing every five years is preferred. Co-testing every five years is an acceptable alternative when appropriate.
Breast health
Your breast cancer risk and mammography schedule should be reviewed using current guidance, prior imaging and shared decision-making.
Individual preventive needs
Blood pressure, vaccines, STI testing, mental health, bone health and other services are considered according to your needs and risk factors.
These examples apply to many average-risk patients but are not a personal recommendation. Different guidance may apply after abnormal results, hysterectomy, immune suppression, cancer or precancer history, DES exposure, pregnancy, symptoms or other risk factors.

Common questions
Well-woman exam FAQs
Your appointment is private, personalized and guided by informed consent.
Do I need a well-woman visit every year?
ACOG recommends periodic well-woman care, commonly once a year, to review preventive needs and support sexual, reproductive and overall health. The timing and services should be personalized.
Will I have a pelvic exam?
Not automatically. ACOG recommends pelvic examinations when symptoms, medical history or a procedure indicate a need. Dr. Elmokadem will discuss the reason, explain the exam and ask your permission.
Is a Pap test needed every year?
No. Cervical cancer screening intervals depend on age, risk, testing method and prior results. An annual visit remains valuable even in years when cervical screening is not due.
Can I discuss birth control or fertility?
Yes. Your visit can include contraception, pregnancy planning, fertility goals and any questions about your reproductive life plan.
Can I be seen if I have no symptoms?
Yes. The annual well-woman visit is preventive. It helps identify recommended screenings, update risk factors and address concerns before they become larger problems.
Does insurance cover an annual exam?
Coverage varies by plan, network and services performed. Contact your insurer and the office before your visit to confirm eligibility, referrals and expected costs.
