What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device, or IUD, is a small T-shaped contraceptive placed inside the uterus by a qualified health professional. It provides highly effective pregnancy prevention for several years, depending on the device, and can be removed whenever you decide it is time for a change or you want to pursue pregnancy.

IUDs do not require a daily routine and do not interfere with sexual activity. Fertility generally returns promptly after removal. Your visit with Dr. Elmokadem is an opportunity to review your health history, menstrual goals, family-planning timeline and preferences before choosing a method.

Important: IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms can help reduce STI transmission risk.

Both types are highly effective and reversible. The better fit depends on your medical history, bleeding pattern and preferences.

Hormonal IUD

Releases a small amount of progestin in the uterus. Depending on the device, hormonal IUDs are approved for approximately 3 to 8 years.

Copper IUD

A hormone-free option that uses copper to interfere with sperm movement. The copper IUD is approved for up to 10 years.

What to expect with IUD placement

    Personal consultation

    We discuss your medical history, medications, periods, pregnancy goals and questions. Pregnancy or STI testing may be recommended.

    Placement

    After a pelvic examination, the IUD is guided through the cervix and positioned in the uterus. Temporary cramping or discomfort can occur.

    Aftercare

    Mild cramping and spotting may occur. You will receive personalized instructions about backup contraception, warning signs and follow-up.

    Removal when you choose

    A clinician can remove the IUD during an office visit. Removal is usually brief, and fertility may return right away.

When should I call the office?

Contact your clinician promptly for severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, unusual or foul-smelling discharge, very heavy bleeding, suspected pregnancy, inability to feel the strings after previously feeling them, or concern that the device has moved. Seek urgent medical care for severe symptoms or a possible emergency.

How effective is an IUD?

IUDs are more than 99% effective. According to ACOG, fewer than 1 in 100 people using an IUD become pregnant during the first year.

Can I get an IUD if I have never given birth?

Many teenagers and adults, including people who have not given birth, can safely use an IUD. A personal medical evaluation is needed to confirm eligibility.

Does IUD insertion hurt?

Experiences vary. Placement may cause brief discomfort or cramping. Ask Dr. Elmokadem what comfort and pain-management options are appropriate for you.

When does an IUD start working?

The copper IUD works immediately. With a hormonal IUD, the need for seven days of backup contraception depends on when it is placed and your prior method. Follow the instructions provided at your visit.

Can an IUD be removed before it expires?

Yes. A qualified clinician can remove an IUD whenever you want to stop using it, change methods or pursue pregnancy.

Does an IUD protect against STIs?

No. IUDs do not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms can help reduce STI transmission risk.
